Why you shouldn’t drink Cow’s Milk

We’ve been consuming milk all our lives ever since we were born. The ubiquitous consumption of cow’s milk is deem to be only natural and normal in this day and age. Dairy is present in almost everything that sometimes we don’t even realise it. Daily examples include coffee, cakes, ice cream, yoghurt, and cheese. Also, we’re surrounded by endless advertisements by dairy industries that claim these products strengthen our bones and being high in calcium. However, there has been increased concerns regarding the ‘health benefits’ that these industries proclaim.

  1. IT’S NOT NATURAL 

Humans are the only species on the planet that drinks the milk of another mammal. Cow’s milk are an excellent source of food for calves, allowing them to grow from a 100 pound calf to a cow weighing 8 times their weight. Once calves are weaned, they no longer drink their mother’s milk. Same goes for any other mammalian species. Cow’s milk contains 3 times the amount of protein than that of human’s milk which messes up our metabolic processes. Every female mammal  produces milk specific to their own species for growth purposes.

 

2. YOU’RE DRINKING PUS

Cows are injected with rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) that is intended to increase production of milk (for us to consume). By increasing levels of IGF-1 , you also increase your estrogen levels and chances of related cancers such as breast cancer. These cows are packed tightly together in factories, constantly surrounded by their own faeces and this promotes the spread of diseases. In order to prevent these spread of diseases, these poor cows are injected with antibiotics. Pus is produced as reaction to bacteria in the udder, one of the most common infections in dairy cows in the United States. Although during the process of pasteurising and homogenising the milk does it kill some bacteria present,  it does not completely eliminate all of it. Milk causes inflammation, and hence gives you acne. It also increases phlegm production.

 

3. LACTOSE INTOLERANT 

75% of the world’s population are lactose intolerant. In order to digest lactose, our body requires the enzyme lactase to do so. However, our lactase activity decreases after the weaning phase. This is why we bloat or rush off to the bathroom after eating ice cream. ’90 percent of Asians, 70 percent of blacks and Native Americans, and 50 percent of Hispanics are lactose intolerant, compared with only about 15 percent of people of Northern European descent.’

 

4. CAESEIN 

According to DR. T. Colin Campbell, the author of The China Study, his studies prove that casein is the most relevant cancer promoter ever known. It is also known as casomorphines and behaves like opiates in the body when they enter our bloodstream. Subsequently, its attaches to opiate receptors in the brain and this is why most vegetarians find it so hard to ditch dairy. Casomorphins trigger an addictive response which is comparable to other drugs such as heroine as they cause mood swings.

 

5. IT LEACHES CALCIUM FROM YOUR BONES

All those advertising gimmicks saying how milk gives you strong bones are now starting to be put to question. There has been studies showing a correlation between milk consumption and osteoporosis. The science behind it is due to the highly acidic nature of milk, heavy metal ions which in this case is Ca 2+ (calcium ions) from our bones are leached to neutralise this acidity resulting in a net loss of bone density despite the fact that these milk have been fortified with calcium.

 

6. IT MAKES YOU FAT

Milk is high in saturated fat (5g per cup) and just when you think skimmed milk would be any better, it isn’t. In fact, children who drank skimmed milk gained more weight than those that drank regular milk. Click here to read more about how skimmed milk is bad for you too.

 

ETHICAL REASONS:

A female cow will only produce milk once they give birth. Calves are stolen from their mother without even having a taste of their mother’s milk. Why? because of our (humans) demand for milk. Mother cows are being raped from time to time again, having sperms injected, in order to produce milk for our consumption while having to suffer the agony of having her child stolen away from her. Imagine Your kid being taken away from you just as he/she was born, terrible isn’t it?

 

We’ve have seen instances of many precocious puberty cases in teenagers or even babies these days because of the consumption of cow’s milk such as girls growing breasts at the age of 8. I personally figured that milk was the primary cause of my acne. I hope this article has made you more informed about what exactly you’re drinking and if you’re asking ‘ What do I drink then?’ here are some suggestions:

There’s a wide range of dairy alternatives: Soy, Rice ( my favourite), Almond, Hazelnut, Macadamia, Coconut etc.

You can always still enjoy a nice cup of coffee or hot cocoa, just replace it with soy milk or almond milk instead. Starbucks vanilla syrup is vegan.  However its always important to check the labels while shopping at super markets, make sure there’s no ‘casein’ or ‘whey’. I’ll always go the extra mile by asking the baristas if their matcha/red velvet powder contains milk solids or not. Coffee bean’s matcha powder unfortunately does contain milk solids.

You have the power to make a difference by investing your dollar someplace else and not purchasing dairy in any form.
